Types of Conditions
There are some health conditions that affect the lymphatic system, which can cause your arms and legs to swell. Primary and Secondary Lymphoedema are the result of malformation of lymphatic vessels or blockage, which prevents lymph fluid from draining properly through your body. Swelling can also be caused by a problem with blood flow, known as Chronic Venous Insufficiency.
No one person’s experience of these conditions is the same. You might find that clothing is getting tighter or leaving a mark. Perhaps you’re finding it harder to get around or your legs feel heavy at the end of the day. When swelling starts to impact your life, it’s important to get the advice and support you need.
Venous Insufficiency
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (or CVI) occurs when blood isn't pumped effectively from the lower legs back to the heart. It may result in swelling, skin changes and make it more difficult for wounds to heal.
Primary Lymphoedema
Primary Lymphoedema can be an inherited condition caused by problems with the development of the body's lymph system or you could be the first one in your family with primary lymphedema. It is rare, and affects more women than men, usually in the arms and legs.
Secondary Lymphoedema
Secondary Lymphoedema is more common and is often caused by surgery after lymph nodes are removed. It can also be the result of cancer, cancer treatment, infections or injury.
